Luxury vinyl planks, often called LVP or LVT, are a flexible PVC based board. They have a printed decorative layer and a clear wear layer on top. Unlike hybrid, the board itself has some give. That is what makes vinyl softer, quieter and warmer underfoot.
That softness is why vinyl planks are everywhere in aged care, medical, childcare and rentals. More family homes are choosing them too, where comfort and noise matter as much as looks.
Vinyl planks can be loose laid, glued down or clicked together. It depends on the product and the subfloor. Glue down is the most stable of the three. That makes it the right call for large open areas, rooms with a lot of sun, and commercial spaces.
When comfort, quiet and water resistance matter more than having a rigid board underfoot.
The board is PVC based, so it does not absorb water at all. Bathrooms, laundries, kitchens and entries are all fair game.
The flexible board takes the hardness out of a concrete slab. You feel the difference in a kitchen, where you stand for long stretches.
Vinyl soaks up impact instead of passing it on. You do not get the hollow click of a floating floor, or the hardness of tile.
A glue down vinyl plank can be as thin as 2mm to 5mm. That helps when you need to match an existing floor height at a doorway.
Single glued planks can be lifted and replaced without touching the rest of the floor. That is a real advantage in a commercial space.
Heavy commercial wear layers are available for clinics, offices, retail and aged care, with slip ratings to match.
The installation method matters as much as the board. Choosing the wrong one for the room is the most common reason a vinyl floor lifts, gaps or curls at the edges.
We work this out for you at the quote based on the subfloor, room size and sun exposure.
Vinyl shows every imperfection under it, so the subfloor is where the job is won.
1
We measure, assess the subfloor and sun exposure, recommend the right installation method and give you a fixed price.
2
Moisture testing, grinding, patching and a smoothing compound where needed, because vinyl telegraphs every ridge and hollow.
3
Planks acclimatise on site, then we set out the run so the pattern repeat does not read as obvious across the room.
4
Planks laid, glued or clicked, edges and thresholds finished, silicone to wet areas where required, old flooring removed.

Both are waterproof. Vinyl planks are flexible, softer and quieter underfoot, and usually thinner. Hybrid has a rigid stone plastic composite core. It is harder, resists scratches better and copes with a slightly uneven subfloor. So vinyl wins on comfort and quiet. Hybrid wins on stiffness and dent resistance.
Yes, and it is one of their best uses. The board does not soak up water. Glue it down, run silicone around the edge, and you get a floor that handles a wet area properly and still looks like timber.
They can, because the material is flexible. Wide felt pads or load spreading cups under heavy items fix it. Got a heavy piano, a large gun safe or commercial shelving? Go hybrid, or a heavy commercial grade vinyl.
Quality products have UV stabilisers in the wear layer and hold up well. Cheap imported vinyl in a west facing room with no window treatment can fade and can also expand. In heavy sun we recommend a glue down installation and a product with a proper UV rating.
Yes, as long as the tiles are sound and the grout lines are filled with a smoothing compound. Leave the grout lines open and the vinyl will slowly sink into them. You will end up seeing the tile pattern through the floor.
A residential grade plank with a 0.3mm to 0.5mm wear layer will typically give 10 to 20 years. Commercial grade wear layers of 0.55mm and above are rated for far heavier traffic and last considerably longer in a home.
They are one of the best options. They are waterproof, hard wearing, quick to install between tenants, and individual damaged planks can be replaced without redoing the whole floor.
