Hybrid flooring sits between laminate and vinyl. It takes the rigid, stable core of laminate and pairs it with a tough commercial grade wear layer, which is why it has become a popular floor in new and renovated Australian homes.
The core is usually SPC, a stone plastic composite. It is dense, heavy and barely reacts to temperature swings, so it holds up well through living areas, kitchens, hallways and bedrooms with no cupping or gapping. We do not recommend standard hybrid for bathrooms or laundries. If you need a fully waterproof floor for those rooms, vinyl planks are the better choice.
It clicks together and floats over the subfloor. That means it can often go straight over existing tile or a prepped slab, with very little mess.
Water resistant, stable, hard wearing and quick to install. A strong choice for living areas, kitchens, hallways and bedrooms.
The core does not easily absorb water. Everyday spills, pet accidents or a wet mop will not swell the boards the way they would swell standard laminate.
An SPC core barely moves with temperature. So hybrid can run through a sunroom, over a slab in a west facing living area, or in a holiday home that goes from freezing to hot.
Commercial grade wear layers shrug off pet claws, dropped pans and dragged dining chairs far better than a timber finish.
The same floor can run through living areas, kitchens, hallways and bedrooms without a change of material, which makes the home feel bigger. We keep bathrooms and laundries for fully waterproof options like vinyl planks.
Most hybrid boards come with an acoustic backing already attached, so they are noticeably quieter and warmer than tile or floating laminate.
It clicks together and floats. There is no glue, no sanding and no coating, so in most homes you can walk on it the same day.
Hybrid ranges vary enormously in quality and the differences are not obvious in a showroom. Two boards that look identical can perform very differently after three years of afternoon sun and a dog.
These are the specifications we check for you.
Floating floors are only as flat as what is underneath, so preparation is most of the job.
1
We measure, check the subfloor for flatness and moisture, and give you a fixed price with board, trims and rubbish removal itemised.
2
Grinding high spots, filling hollows and levelling so the finished floor does not flex, click or telegraph the slab.
3
We set out the run to suit the light and the longest sightline. Then we leave the right expansion gaps at every wall and fixed object.
4
Boards clicked in, scotia or new skirting fitted, thresholds and door jambs finished, old flooring removed and the site left clean.

Hybrid flooring puts the rigid, stable core of laminate together with the waterproof make up of vinyl. Most boards have an SPC stone plastic composite core, a printed decorative layer and a tough clear wear layer on top. Many come with acoustic underlay already stuck to the back.
The board itself resists water well, so surface spills, pet accidents and mopping will not damage it. It is still a floating floor, so standing water can eventually find its way through the joins to the subfloor. Because of that we position standard hybrid for living areas, kitchens, hallways and bedrooms rather than bathrooms or laundries. If you need a fully waterproof floor for those wet areas, vinyl planks are the better choice.
Usually yes. The tiles need to be well stuck down and level, and the grout lines filled so the board does not flex into them. This is a big part of why hybrid is so popular in renos. It saves the mess and cost of pulling up tile.
Laminate has a fibreboard core that swells if water sits on it, though premium waterproof-surface laminate ranges handle everyday spills well. Hybrid has a plastic composite core that copes with water a little better again, but neither is meant for bathrooms or laundries, where vinyl planks are the better choice. Outside wet areas it comes down to budget and feel underfoot: laminate is usually the better value, and one of the toughest, most practical options for a busy family home.
It is one of the better options. The wear layer resists claw scratching, the surface resists water well, and the rigid core will not swell. Choose a board with a thicker wear layer and a textured surface, which hides marks better than a high gloss finish.
In a normal family home, 15 to 25 years is a realistic expectation for a quality board. Wear layer thickness is the main driver, and the very cheap imported ranges are usually where the disappointment comes from.
No. It is an indoor product. Direct sun and big temperature swings on an open balcony cause expansion problems and fading. Most warranties rule out outdoor use completely.
