Laminate has come a long way. Modern boards have deep texture that lines up with the printed grain, bevelled edges and matt finishes. In most rooms people cannot pick them from timber until they get down on the floor.
A laminate board has three parts. A high density fibreboard core, a printed decorative layer, and a clear melamine wear layer pressed on top. That wear layer is very hard. It beats every other timber look floor for scratches, dents and everyday impact, which is why laminate is the standard pick for busy family homes, hallways and rentals.
Good quality laminate with a premium waterproof-surface finish is one of the toughest, most practical floors you can put in a family home. We do not think hybrid is automatically the better choice just because it costs more. For most living areas, kitchens, hallways and bedrooms, a premium waterproof-surface laminate holds up just as well day to day, often for less.
We are Quick-Step Master Installers and we lay the full Quick-Step laminate range. We know the click systems, the expansion gaps and the warranty conditions inside out.
It is the best value per square metre of any timber look floor, and it is genuinely tough.
The melamine wear layer is harder than any timber finish. That is why laminate holds up so well in hallways, entries and homes with dogs.
For large open plan areas and whole house jobs, laminate delivers the timber look for a fraction of what engineered timber costs.
It clicks together and floats over an underlay. A whole house can often be done in a day or two. No glue, no sanding, no coating.
If you want a uniform look with no dramatic colour variation between boards, laminate delivers that far more predictably than natural timber.
Our top ranges have a genuinely waterproof surface layer, not just water resistant, so they shrug off everyday kitchen and living area spills.
Sweep and damp mop. No recoating, no oiling, no special products and no sanding schedule to plan for.
Most laminate complaints come down to three things. A cheap board. A subfloor that was not prepped. Or expansion gaps that were never left. All three are avoidable.
Here is what we specify and check.
Quick-Step Master Installer standards, applied to every job whatever brand you choose.
1
We measure the rooms and check the subfloor. Then you get a fixed price, with board, underlay, trims and removal of the old floor all itemised.
2
Levelling and grinding so the floating floor sits flat, with moisture testing on concrete slabs before anything is ordered.
3
Boards set out to suit the light and the main sightline, with correct expansion gaps left at every perimeter and fixed object.
4
Boards clicked in, scotia or skirting fitted, door jambs undercut, thresholds set, and all the old flooring taken away.

Laminate is a high density fibreboard core with a printed decorative layer and a hard clear wear layer on top. Floating means the boards click into each other and sit on an underlay. They are not glued or nailed down. That makes the install faster and lets the floor move naturally.
Standard laminate is water resistant, not waterproof, and standing water can swell the fibreboard core at the joins. Our premium waterproof-surface ranges go a big step further and shrug off everyday kitchen and living area spills. For a bathroom or a wet-area laundry, vinyl planks are still the safer choice.
Yes, over most hard flat surfaces. Tile, vinyl and timber are all fine, as long as the surface is clean, dry, level and sound. It cannot go over carpet. Any dips or high spots have to be fixed first, or the floor will flex and the joins will fail.
AC3 is fine for bedrooms and light traffic. AC4 is what we recommend for most family homes, hallways and living areas. AC5 is a commercial grade and is worth it for shops, offices or a home that takes very heavy traffic.
A good AC4 laminate in a normal home lasts 15 to 25 years. Cheap low rated boards in a busy hallway can look tired in five. The rating matters more than the price tag.
Many ranges can, with limits on maximum surface temperature, usually around 27 degrees. It has to be confirmed against the specific product and the underlay must be rated for it. We check this before recommending a board.
Yes, single boards can be replaced. The floor is a clicked system, so it means working back from the nearest wall, or cutting the damaged board out and gluing a new one in. Keep a spare box from the original batch. It makes the job easier and the colour will match.
