Choosing a floor is mostly about the room, not the brochure

A floor that is perfect in a north facing lounge can be the wrong call in a laundry. And the best product in the world will fail over a slab that was never tested. Every service page below covers the same things. What the product is. Where it works. Where it does not. How we install it. What it costs to look after.

A quick way to narrow it down before we bring samples to your place.

Flooring Best for Main strengths Watch out for
Carpet Bedrooms, lounges, stairs, rentals Warm, quiet, softest underfoot, best value for large areas Not for wet areas or kitchens
Engineered timber Living areas, hallways, whole homes Real hardwood surface, wide boards, can be recoated Avoid bathrooms and laundries
Laminate Whole homes, hallways, rentals, busy family living areas Hardest scratch resistance, best value timber look, toughest everyday wear Premium ranges have a waterproof surface; not for full wet areas
Hybrid Living areas, kitchens, hallways and bedrooms Rigid, stable, tough wear layer, pet friendly Not for bathrooms or laundries; interior only, never on balconies
Vinyl planks Wet areas, clinics, rentals, kitchens Completely waterproof, quiet, softest hard floor Can dent under very heavy loads
Carpet tiles Offices, home offices, playrooms, commercial Replace single tiles, heavy duty, minimal waste Less soft than broadloom carpet
Concrete moisture testing Any slab before a floor goes down Protects warranty, prevents cupping and lifting A test, not a floor covering

The part nobody quotes on, and everybody regrets

Subfloor preparation is where a flooring job is won or lost. A floating floor over a slab with a 6mm hollow will flex and click. Direct stick timber over a slab still releasing moisture will cup within a year. Carpet over an unswept floor will telegraph every bit of grit.

We itemise prep on every quote: moisture testing, grinding, patching, levelling compound and old floor removal. If another quote does not mention any of it, one of two things is true. Either that work is not happening, or it turns up as a variation on the day. Our flooring cost guide sets out what each part should run you.

Frequently asked questions

All of them can work, but the slab has to be moisture tested first. Hybrid and vinyl planks are the most tolerant. Engineered timber is fine once the slab tests within the manufacturer limit. Solid timber is generally the wrong choice over a slab.

For hard floors, laminate rated AC4 or AC5 has the toughest surface. Hybrid is close behind and handles water better. For soft floors, go commercial grade carpet tiles or a tight loop pile solution dyed nylon. Nothing else lasts as long.

Both. We supply at trade pricing across all seven services. We are also happy to install product you have already bought, as long as it suits your subfloor and meets the maker’s requirements.

Yes, and it looks good. Vinyl planks are fully waterproof and can run through living, kitchen, hallway, laundry and bathroom with no change of material. If you want a timber look through the whole home but do not need full waterproofing in every room, a premium waterproof-surface laminate or hybrid flooring covers everything except the wet areas.

Yes. Offices, clinics, childcare, retail and community spaces, usually in carpet tiles or commercial grade vinyl. We can work after hours or in stages to keep the space operating.

We couldn’t be happier with our new floors! Corey and his team did an an excellent job from start to finish. Very friendly, communicative and efficient. Would definitely recommend.
Thanks Corey for the fantastic service you and your team provided in recarpeting our homeYou were professional in liaising with us, right from getting our quote to organizing the job through to finish. It totally removed any stress we thought we would have. Special thanks to Andy whose laying skills are exceptional.Ray & Leanne
I was in the weeds of my house renovations, tired, over it and I needed someone to just know someone who could do my floors without me having to do any research. I had a friend who had just had Corey from Southside finish her floors and she said to me "he wasn't our cheapest quote, but he had the best attitude, he was honest, he was passionate and that's why we went with Corey from Southside" My friend raved about him, that's all I needed. I looked no further. Corey came in, made choosing the perfect floorboard so easy, gave me a quote, which was by the way such a great price and even though I had to keep pushing his work back due to other trades he was never bothered, it was always "just let me know when we can come in" My floors were finally completed last week, I absolutely love them and It only took 2 days. I would post photos but I'm still in the thick of Reno mess.I'm here to save you the time on researching...just go with Southside Flooring, you won't regret it!
Corey and Jacko recently installed our beautiful new floors. They executed our vision to absolute perfection.Their service was incredible, their finish was seamless, and nothing about the job was too much. They were punctual, respectful and their service, and execution was 10/10- Mitch & Taylah
The boys did a great job. Corey was very helpful. They are all very efficient and they cleaned up after themselves. Helping move the furniture was a added bonus
